March 14:  Cordage

From the first strands of twisted grass to the ropes that launched ships and built civilizations, cordage has always been humanity’s most quietly powerful invention. In this immersive, hands-on class, participants will learn to create strong, functional cordage from natural and repurposed materials while discovering how early cultures relied on the same techniques for survival, trade, and art. We’ll explore the science and skill behind twisting plant fibers, weaving simple rope, and tying reliable knots — skills that connect directly to shelter building, toolmaking, firecraft, and everyday outdoor readiness. Each participant will produce their own handmade cord and practice using different types of cordage to build small, useful projects. Mastering cordage is about learning to see the hidden resources around you and transforming them into something strong, purposeful, and enduring.

Highlights:

• Make durable cordage from natural fibers like grass, bark, or plant stems.

• Learn essential knots and lashings for camping, crafts, and daily problem-solving.

• Discover the cultural history of cordage — from Indigenous weaving to ancient ship rigging.

• Gain hands-on practice with skills used in shelter building and toolmaking.

• Earn your Field Binding micro-certification — your next step toward the Wilderness Survival Level I Certificate.
