June 13:  Applied Edgecraft/Toolmaking

A good knife is one of the most valuable and versatile tools in the outdoors. True skill lies not just in using it, however, but in understanding how to make it last. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn safe and effective knife handling techniques, practice controlled carving methods, and explore how early peoples used simple edges to create the tools that made life possible. Through guided instruction and practical projects, you’ll learn to maintain and sharpen your blade, apply it with confidence to carve functional items such as pegs, hooks, and pot hangers, and even experiment with crafting basic tools from natural materials to extend your knife’s usefulness. The focus is on precision, conservation, and creativity — learning to accomplish more with less through mindful craftsmanship. This workshop is accessible to all experience levels, with step-by-step instruction for beginners and advanced practice opportunities for returning participants.

Highlights:

• Learn essential knife safety and handling techniques.

• Practice controlled cuts and simple carving projects.

• Explore how traditional toolmaking conserved resources and inspired ingenuity.

• Craft your own tools from available resources.

• Earn your Edgecraft Practitioner micro-certification toward the Wilderness Survival Level I Certificate.
