May 16: Wayfinding
Long before GPS or compasses, humans found their way by reading the land, the sun, and the stars. In this engaging, hands-on workshop, we’ll explore how early cultures navigated across deserts, forests, and oceans, and how those same observational skills can help us feel more confident, capable, and connected in nature today. Through guided outdoor activities, you’ll learn to use both natural navigation methods and simple modern tools to find direction, interpret landmarks, and understand the terrain around you. Participants will practice reading shadows, following the sun, and using compasses and maps to complete small wayfinding challenges designed to reinforce both skill and teamwork. This workshop builds naturally on lessons from Emergency Shelters, where we learned to interpret terrain and weather patterns for site selection. Newcomers, however, are fully supported with a step-by-step review, ensuring everyone leaves with a solid foundation in orientation and navigation.
